Accommodations

The Outpost is a backcountry lodge and guest ranch situated beneath the mountains of Wapiti,  Tomahawk and Warden Rock along the banks of the Red Deer River as it flows east from Banff National Park and Canada’s Rocky Mountains.  The Outpost offers turn of the century surroundings and the facilities of western warmth and hospitality. Most of the comforts of home coupled with secluded, rustic serenity, make The Outpost a truly incredible civilized way to leave civilization.

The main lodge sits on the edge of the river, and features a country kitchen, dining area, as well as a living room.  The kitchen is where all the hearty home-cooked meals that we are famous for are created, satisfying big mountain appetites! A large wood-burning stove heats the lodge and warms the sole.  Lit by kerosene lanterns and/or propane lights, the lodge is the perfect place to get caught up on reading, playing a game of cards, or making new acquaintances. Large ceiling windows capture the panoramic valley view and the majestic peaks of the Canadian Rockies of Banff National Park.

Although we are a remote backcountry lodge, we do have some of the comforts of home, including hot and cold running water in the main lodge. We have a “telephone”.  Now this telephone was specially imported from no one knows where to make those communication minded people feel more at home!  Of course it’s not connected to anything but a “currant bush”! In the case of a real emergency, we can get a message out on the satellite phones and via the internet.  The covered veranda and open fire pit inspire conversation and storytelling, and have plenty of room to enjoy great cups of coffee and an abundance of home-baking.

Accommodation at The Outpost backcountry lodge is in fully furnished cabins featuring wood-burning stoves and comfy hand-made duvets.  All linens and towels are provided except on the Crash ‘n’ Dash package, where accommodation is of the no frills variety…bunk, pillow and a roof over your head!  Kerosene lanterns and candles provide the lighting in the cabins.  Although we can comfortably sleep 15-25, we can’t always guarantee private sleeping arrangements, as it depends on the group size, dynamics and availability.

Outhouses are sanitary and well maintained and are provided for both the cowboys and the cowgirls.  The shower house has plenty of hot water, and is a welcome attraction after a day in the saddle.  At the end of the day the hot tub was the place to relax in heated glacial water. We have a new one but it is a little more complicated than the old one, and we haven’t figured out how to get the water going where we need it.  Let’s just say…it is a work in progress! Relax in the flow of lantern light and twinkling starlight above the mountain peaks or gather around the fire pit to swap stories, tell lies or sing songs.

As you settle into life at The Outpost, feel free to explore the many buildings and facilities.  Feel free to check out the barn, farrier shop, and horse corrals.  We have two brand spanking new tie stall shelters that will accommodate in style up to 12 horses staying with us on one of Bring Your Own Horse packages. They are so nice…careful though, they can sleep bad cowboys as well! The Knead a Fix Cabin offers a solution to those aching bones and muscles with relaxation, therapeutic and hot stone massage. Across the yard you will find The Outpost Hotel. Constructed in the summer of 2004 and built on wagon running gear, this building is the perfect spot for meetings, and special events like weddings, anniversaries, and fitness retreats.
