Job Board

Come work for us … work hard, have fun and learn a thing or two!

If you love working with and learning from mules and horses, share a desire to maintain cowboy traditions and way of life, and enjoy the seclusion of a backcountry experience, than we would encourage you to check out our seasonal job positions.  We have part-time, full-time and casual positions, for wranglers, teamsters, and cooks who enjoy working with people and love to laugh.  Full time employees work a 5 or 6 day week with meals, snacks and comfortable accommodation provided whether you are working or enjoying some time off.   As we are remote, we try to give our employees days off where they can get out of the bush and back to civilization.  Of course, some staff take advantage of the opportunity to just “holiday” at The Outpost exploring the backcountry on horseback on their time off.

Wranglers
The day starts at about 6:00am, starting shower and kitchen barrels and lighting the wood-burning stove in the lodge, feeding livestock, and cleaning pens.  Grooming, tacking, and riding our saddle horses, packing lunch animals, and harnessing, hooking and driving the draft teams are duties performed by our wranglers. Expect great days in the wilderness, trail guiding for our guests, with time out for meals and the cowboy staple, coffee! Working young stock on the ground and in the saddle, and “legging up” our seasoned crew are part of the job, ensuring our animals are prepared for every challenge they meet on the trail.  We make the health and safety of our guests, staff and animals our priority!  Being handy around the barn and able to trim and/or shoe a horse is definitely an asset but not mandatory. Preference will be given to those applicants with backcountry guiding, packing, and driving experience with both mules and horses and those with knowledge of the trails in our riding area.

Teamsters
As no motorized vehicle access is permitted to The Outpost, we rely on our draft mule and horse teams to transport our guests to and from the Bighorn campground to our little hideaway for overnight holidays and daily getaways.  Preference will be given to applicants with backcountry driving experience with 2, 4 and 6 up, and those that have a working knowledge of the “long ears”. Drivers are expected to clean and maintain the wagons, buggies and stagecoaches, as well as care, groom and harness their teams. We are always looking for qualified teamsters throughout the season, and require extra help for large groups. Being a handy guy or gal, is always an asset.

Cook and Cook’s Helper
Our cook and helper are responsible for preparing gourmet ranch style meals for guests and staff from 5-25, while ensuring proper food service and safety industry guidelines are met.  Food Safety training is provided at the start of our season at our cost.  It is the responsibility of the cook to order quality food items weekly and maintain guest food and linen supply inventory supplies. We are famous for our home-made soups, pies, desserts and breads, and therefore require someone experienced in baking and good old homestyle cooking. Maintaining cleanliness of the lodge, kitchen, cabins, showers and outhouses are part of the job duties. We know the cook’s days can be long, so the art of delegation (i.e. dragging the wranglers in to help with the dishes) is permitted.  All staff members are responsible for ensuring the coffee is always on, and our baked goods available for any day riders dropping by for a visit.  Guest service is what we are about, and the cook should be the hostess (or host) with the “mostess”! Warm, friendly, and hospitable, even on bad hair days! Good time management skills are necessary, thereby ensuring plenty of time for riding. Be advised, that no matter how much Tim begs and pleads for home-cooking on cook’s day off, it isn’t in the job description.  “Man can live on peanut butter and jelly” is the standard comeback line and feel free to use it.

Requirements
All job positions require a love for the western way of life and a heart-felt desire to work with people and our most trusted staff members – our four-legged friends!  Wranglers and Teamsters are required to dress “western” with cowboy hats, jeans, boots, and shirts and have farm, ranch and/or horse experience (preferably western).  All job applicants must have current Standard or Wilderness First Aid Training certification.  Wranglers and Teamsters are required to have completed the online Interpretitive Guide Association (IGA) Basic course.  The IGA Course fee will be reimbursed upon fulfilling your employee contract.  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, a Canadian resident, have appropriate working visas, or be selected by us to apply through the Temporary Foreign Worker program. You must work well with others and on your own, and be comfortable living in the backcountry without computers or cell phones. Preference will be given to those with trail knowledge and previous working experience in our riding area.

Please email your application to info@outpostatwardenrock.com  Please include a cover letter, your resume outlining your horse experience, and a photo of yourself.    We interview personally for these positions in January through mid March.  If you are applying for the first time from out of province or country, and not available personally for an interview, we will conduct a telephone interview.  You will then be required to submit a brief video, telling us about your extraordinary self, and demonstrating your tacking, ground and riding skills and general manner around horses and/or mules.

Good luck, and thanks for thinking of us for 2024.
We hope to welcome you to The Outpost this summer, and share in some great times!
